From the Ice to the Court
Maxime Meyer grew up skating on the frozen ponds of Toronto, Ontario, where he first honed his competitive edge on the hockey rink. His mother, Valerie Samson, was a standout basketball player at Laval University in Quebec City, a background that sparked his early interest in the sport.
At the age of 15, Meyer made the pivotal decision to trade his skates for sneakers, enrolling at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. The move placed him under the tutelage of Mike Gillian, IMG Academy's Basketball Director, who quickly recognized Meyer's raw potential and relentless work ethic.
A Commitment to Duke
After a meteoric rise on the national circuit, Meyer committed to Duke's 2026 recruiting class, turning down offers from Florida, SMU and Vanderbilt. The Blue Devils' class was already ranked No. 1 nationally, and Meyer's addition was hailed as a cornerstone for the team's frontcourt.
Ranked as the No. 18 center in the 2026 class and the No. 21 prospect in Florida, Meyer will arrive on campus in mid‑June following his participation with Team Canada at the FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup 2026. His size, skill set and basketball IQ are expected to complement Duke's already deep frontcourt.
A New Era of Frontcourt Depth
Duke's coaching staff believes Meyer's arrival will deepen an already formidable frontcourt, providing a blend of physicality and finesse that could reshape the team's dynamics. The recruit's journey — from Canadian hockey rinks to Florida's premier basketball academy — exemplifies the increasingly global talent pipeline feeding into college basketball's elite programs.
