A Century in the Making
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will mark the 100th anniversary of Kenan Stadium in 2026, turning the historic venue into a focal point of celebration and modernization.
When the stadium first opened its gates on November 24, 1927, it quickly became the home of Tar Heel football, witnessing 551 contests that produced a cumulative record of 328 wins, 207 losses and 16 ties.
To honor this milestone, a suite of upgrades is slated for installation before the 2026 season. Two Daktronics videoboards will grace the east and west ends, while nine LED ribbon boards will wrap the entire seating bowl, delivering crisp visuals and real‑time statistics.
The audio experience will also be transformed with a state‑of‑the‑art speaker system, and the press box will undergo a comprehensive renovation to meet contemporary standards.
Fans can look forward to the return of the Chapel Thrill Concert Series, a tradition that blends music and game day atmosphere, as well as a commemorative logo that will appear on merchandise and promotional materials.
A special throwback uniform, reminiscent of the 1980 ACC Championship season, will debut on the field, linking past glory with present ambition. The renovation of the press box and the installation of new technology are part of a broader effort to enhance the overall game‑day experience.
University officials have emphasized that honoring alumni and celebrating the stadium’s legacy are central to the centennial plan, ensuring that the spirit of Tar Heel football endures for generations to come.
