Penn State is gearing up for the 2026 campaign with a schedule that offers more favorable matchups than in recent years, but the team’s success will hinge on how quickly it can shore up a few critical areas.
A Secondary to Reckon With
The Nittany Lions boast one of the nation’s most formidable secondaries, anchored by standouts such as Daryus Dixson, Audavion Collins, Zion Tracy and Marcus Neal Jr. Their ability to limit big plays will be a cornerstone of the defense.
Complementing the back end, the linebacker corps brings depth and experience, featuring veterans like Tony Rojas, Caleb Bacon, Kooper Ebel and Cael Brezina, who together provide versatility against both the run and the pass.
In the red‑zone, new additions Rocco Becht, Benjamin Brahmer and Chase Sowell are expected to add fresh options, potentially easing the scoring concerns that have limited the team in previous seasons.
However, the offensive line remains a work in progress. While talented, the unit lacks cohesive game experience, which could translate into inconsistencies when protecting the quarterback or opening lanes for the running game.
Defensively, the line presents a different challenge. Depth is thin, and the team does not yet have proven starters who can consistently disrupt opposing offensive fronts.
Perhaps the most notable narrative is the absence of a game‑changing, superstar talent. The Nittany Lions will need to rely on collective effort rather than a single marquee player to compete for a championship.
If the coaching staff can meld these pieces together before the season opener, the team could turn its schedule advantage into a realistic shot at a title run.
