The Detroit Red Wings announced that they would not be signing a group of young prospects, including Maxmilian Kilpinen and Landon Miller, after the June 1 contract deadline passed without agreements.
Draft Background
Kilpinen entered the organization as a 2022 draft pick, but his stint in Sweden proved underwhelming. He appeared in only three SHL games and spent the remainder of his time in the country’s second division, where he recorded 16 goals, 22 assists and 38 points in 33 appearances.
Miller, a 2024 draft selection, faced a crowded field of goalie candidates in Detroit. His first professional season with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds saw a 4.07 goals‑against average and a .877 save percentage across 37 games, numbers that ultimately led to his release.
Both players were among a larger cohort of unsigned prospects. The club also opted not to retain names such as Anton Johansson, Sebastian Cossa and others who had been on professional tryout contracts.
Roster Implications
The moves clear cap space and open roster spots for players who can meet the team’s performance standards. Management indicated that further evaluations will continue through the summer, with an eye toward the upcoming training camp.
