Countdown to Kickoff
The Nittany Lions are marking the days until they step onto the field for their season opener against the Marshall Thundering Herd, a milestone that sits 95 days away on the calendar.
At the heart of the special teams conversation is Cristiano Rosa, a redshirt senior who brings a blend of experience and proven leg strength to the role of kickoff specialist. Having honed his craft at both Central Connecticut State and James Madison, Rosa arrives in State College with a résumé that includes 114 touchbacks over two seasons as the primary kickoff man for the Dukes.
Rosa’s time in Harrisonburg was marked by more than just consistency; he nailed a 40‑yard field goal and converted several extra points, showcasing a versatility that could prove valuable in tight games. His ability to consistently drive the ball deep enough to force touchbacks remains a focal point for Penn State’s coaching staff as they evaluate options for the opening contest.
The upcoming matchup at Beaver Stadium will be a litmus test for Rosa’s readiness. If the redshirt senior can replicate his collegiate touchback rate, the Nittany Lions may start the season with a hidden advantage, pinning opponents deep in their own territory from the first kick.
