Samuel Montembeault’s first season as the Montreal Canadiens’ starting goaltender ended far differently than he had imagined. After opening the year as the team’s number one net‑minder, the veteran found himself watching from the bench as two rookie keepers took over the crease.
A Season of Transition
Montembeault says he was treated fairly by the organization and kept in constant communication throughout the campaign. Yet the shift forced him to confront a mindset that he admits was far from ideal.
The Weight of Expectation
"I didn’t arrive with the right mindset," he confessed. "I put too much pressure on myself and overthought every puck that crossed the blue line. That mental clutter showed up in my performances."
Seeking Clarity Off the Ice
To break the cycle, Montembeault turned to sports psychologist Marco Marciano, whose guidance helped him untangle the overanalysis that had been weighing on his game. The collaboration marked a turning point in his approach to preparation.
Physical Reset and Summer Work
Now in the best shape of his career, the goaltender has already begun an early summer training regimen. He says the physical work is meant to carry forward the confidence he is building mentally.
A Positive Outlook for the Future
Even though he finds himself in an "unwanted threesome" of goalies, Montembeault describes the locker‑room atmosphere as supportive. He stresses that the relationship among the net‑minders is solid and that he is ready to lend a hand to the younger players if he remains with the club next season.
"I’m looking forward to contributing however I can," he added, emphasizing his willingness to help the team’s development while still focusing on his own recovery and growth.
