As BYU prepares for the 2026 football season, the latest roster projection paints a picture of a team that blends proven veterans with a wave of promising newcomers.
Quarterback Landscape
Quarterback Bear Bachmeier has emerged as the clear starter, giving the Cougars a steady hand under center. The backup role will be contested by Treyson Bourguet and Enoch Watson during Fall Camp, each looking to prove they can handle the pressure when called upon.
Coaches have praised Bachmeier’s poise and decision‑making, noting that his experience from the previous season gives him a clear edge in the opening lineup.
Running Back and Receiver Dynamics
Running back LJ Martin is being hailed as the best player at his position in the Big 12 and is considered one of the top backs in the nation, giving the offense a dynamic rushing threat. At wide receiver, the team faces uncertainty after Cody Hagen retired due to injury, opening the door for freshmen Legend Glasker, Jaron Pula and Terrance Saryon to make an immediate impact.
Veteran Roger Saleapaga and Walker Lyons stood out during Spring Camp and are expected to shoulder major responsibilities at tight end, adding depth and versatility to the skill positions.
Line and Defensive Front
The offensive line returns intact from Spring Camp, with Andrew Gentry, Bruce Mitchell, Kyle Sfarcioc and Paki Finau slated to start, though a few starting spots remain undecided as the staff evaluates performance in practice. On the defensive line, Devoux Tuataga, a returned missionary, joins a group that already includes Sione Moa, who is expected to play a significant role if he stays healthy.
Linebacker corps are stacked with experience, as Isaiah Glasker, Cade Uluave and Siale Esera lead a unit that blends veteran savvy with youthful energy.
Secondary and Special Teams
In the secondary, Raider Damuni, Faletau Satuala and Tommy Prassas form the top three at safety, while a rotation of Evan Johnson, Therrian Alexander III, Jayven Williams and Jonathan Kabeya will see extensive action at cornerback. Special teams will feature Brody Laga, who has returned from his mission and will compete for the starting kicking role, adding competition and depth to the unit.
