DJ Irving, a former standout at Boston University and professional player in Spain, has been elevated to the role of Associate Head Coach at Florida Gulf Coast University, the school announced this week. His promotion comes after a season in which the Eagles achieved their first ASUN semifinal appearance since 2021 and set new marks for home winning streaks.
Pat Chambers, the head coach of the Eagles, spoke highly of Irving’s impact, noting his acumen in recruiting, player development and relationship building that have already translated into on‑court success. Chambers emphasized that Irving’s presence has strengthened the program’s culture and competitive edge.
In his inaugural season with the program, Irving helped the team secure its first ASUN semifinal appearance since 2021 and orchestrated the longest home winning streak since 2022, as well as the longest home conference streak since 2019. The achievements mark a turning point for a program that had been seeking renewed momentum.
Irving’s coaching pedigree includes a stint at the University of Miami, where he contributed to a historic Final Four run in 2022‑23 and helped the squad finish the season with a 29‑8 record and a share of the ACC regular‑season championship. His work at Miami demonstrated an ability to elevate talent and execute complex game plans.
Before joining FGCU, he honed his craft at a Roman Catholic preparatory program in Philadelphia, guiding the team to multiple league championship games, and earlier served as a graduate assistant at Penn State under Chambers. Those experiences equipped him with a deep understanding of player development and program building.
From Player to Coach: A Path Defined by Competition
Irving’s own playing career took him from Boston University, where he earned All‑America East honors, to a professional contract in Spain with Union Linense Baloncesto, where he led the club in scoring, assists and steals. Those experiences on the court would later inform his approach as a coach, emphasizing discipline, versatility and relentless effort.
