Iowa State women's basketball will open its 2026‑2027 campaign with a notable delay for one of its newest recruits, freshman Tjasa Turnsek. The Slovenian forward is expected to report to campus after the summer, a timeline shaped by her ongoing commitments to the national team.
A Delay Shaped by International Duty
Turnsek's arrival will be later than the typical June 16 reporting date for the Cyclones. She will join the squad only when her obligations with Slovenia's senior development programs conclude, a schedule that could push her start into the early weeks of the academic year.
International Success at a Young Age
Turnsek has already distinguished herself on the world stage, averaging 18 points and seven rebounds at the 2025 FIBA U18 Women’s EuroBasket. She contributed to Slovenia's championship run in the Women’s Adriatic Basketball Association U17 League, earning MVP honors in both 2023 and 2024, and helped secure the 2023 U17 European title.
Coach Fennelly's Support for Global Play
Head coach Bill Fennelly has repeatedly voiced his belief that competing abroad sharpens a player's skills and perspective. He points to former Cyclone Bridget Carleton, whose international experience preceded a successful professional career, as a model for Turnsek's development.
The team is also preparing for a sweeping roster transition. Last season's core has largely departed, and nine newcomers have been added to the mix. Fennelly emphasizes strength training, conditioning, skill refinement and team bonding as the foundation for the upcoming campaign.
Despite the late arrival of Turnsek, the Cyclones remain focused on building chemistry early. The coaching staff has designed workouts that integrate the new players while preserving the competitive edge that defined previous seasons. Fans can expect a blend of seasoned veterans and fresh talent vying for minutes as the roster settles into its new identity.
