Five SIUE Baseball Players Earn Academic All-District Honors

Excellence in the Classroom Fuels Record-Breaking Season on the Field

Five members of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team have been recognized by College Sports Communicators as Academic All-District honorees, a testament to their outstanding performance both in the classroom and on the diamond.

Academic Excellence Meets Athletic Triumph

The distinction highlights a season in which the Cougars captured their first Ohio Valley Conference championship and posted a program-record 33 victories, underscoring the program’s rapid ascent.

To qualify, each student-athlete must maintain a minimum 3.500 grade point average and meet specific participation thresholds, a standard that these five have comfortably exceeded.

Porter Conn, pursuing a master's in Exercise and Sport Psychology, carries a perfect 4.00 GPA and has appeared in 21 relief appearances; Daniel Gierer, a Biological Sciences major with a 3.94 GPA, featured in all 57 games; Sean Kang, studying Business Administration-Finance with a 3.61 GPA, started 41 of 44 contests; Joseph Martin, an Accountancy major with a 3.81 GPA, logged 24 outings from the bullpen; and Spencer Stearns, a Mechanical Engineering student with a 4.00 GPA, led the staff with eight wins and a 3.74 earned run average.

Pathway to National Recognition

The honorees now advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot, with the national teams scheduled to be announced on June 23, offering the possibility of further accolades for the Cougars.

University officials have praised the students for embodying the institution’s commitment to developing well-rounded leaders, noting that academic distinction complements athletic achievement.
