A Dual Celebration of Scholarship and Sport
Youngstown State’s baseball program celebrated a rare double distinction this spring as seniors Braden Gebhardt and Teddy Ruffner earned spots on the 2026 College Sports Communicators Academic All‑District® Baseball Team. The honor, selected by a national panel of sports information directors, recognizes student‑athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the diamond.
Gebhardt’s Record‑Setting Season
Gebhardt, a left‑handed pitcher from Howland, Ohio, capped his collegiate career with a string of performances that placed him among the Horizon League’s elite. He finished the season with a 5‑4 record, a 3.19 earned‑run average and 104 strikeouts over 87.1 innings, while also being named the league’s Pitcher of the Year and earning first‑team all‑conference honors.
Beyond his on‑field production, Gebhardt maintained a 3.95 GPA while completing a marketing degree, a feat that earned him a place on the Horizon League All‑Academic Team and marked his third consecutive year on the CSC Academic All‑District list.
Ruffner’s Balanced Excellence
Ruffner, a mechanical engineering major from Mars, Pennsylvania, combined a perfect 4.00 GPA with a versatile offensive role for the Penguins.
In 2026 he recorded 28 hits, including seven doubles, a triple and three home runs, while also scoring 20 runs, driving in 18, walking 19 times and stealing five bases. His disciplined approach mirrored his academic performance, illustrating a well‑rounded collegiate experience.
Both athletes graduated this spring, closing a chapter that saw them contribute to a program increasingly focused on excellence in competition and scholarship.
The recognition also spotlights College Sports Communicators, the national body that administers the Academic All‑District program. Founded in 1957 as the College Sports Information Directors of America and later partnered with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the organization continues to promote achievement across collegiate athletics in the United States and Canada.
