Two former Texas Longhorns, defensive lineman Casey Hampton and quarterback Colt McCoy, have earned spots on the 2027 College Football Hall of Fame ballot, a testament to careers that spanned dominance in college and success in the NFL.
A Legendary Duo
Hampton, a two-time first-team All-American at the University of Texas, anchored a defense that ranked sixth nationally in total tackles in 1999 and seventh in yards per game the following season. His leadership helped the Longhorns achieve back-to-back top-ten defensive finishes, a rarity for a lineman.
McCoy, meanwhile, rewrote the Texas record books as the first quarterback in school history to guide the team to consecutive 12-win seasons. He finished his collegiate career with a 45-8 record, 1,157 completions for 13,253 yards and 112 touchdowns, cementing his place among the program’s all-time greats.
Both players translated that college success into professional careers. Hampton was selected 19th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2002 NFL Draft, earned five Pro Bowl selections, captured two Super Bowl rings, and was inducted into the Steelers Hall of Honor in 2024. McCoy’s NFL journey took him through stints with the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, Washington Redskins, New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals, accumulating 7,975 passing yards and 34 touchdowns over a 13-year career.
The Hall of Fame’s induction class will be announced in early 2027, bringing together a select group of candidates whose contributions have shaped the sport. Their inclusion underscores the lasting impact of Texas football on the national stage.
