A Sunday Tradition on Campus
The Men’s Group at Catholic University has turned the simple act of playing soccer into a vibrant ritual that weaves together competition, camaraderie, and faith. Open to students, staff, and priests alike, the weekly pickup games create a space where academic pressures ease and personal connections deepen.
Matches are scheduled for Sunday afternoons and are held at several familiar spots across the campus, including the Law School Lawn and the DuFour Center. In addition to the games, the group meets every Friday morning in the Happel Room of Caldwell Hall for formation sessions that explore the spiritual dimensions of sport and community.
Josh Abando, Campus Minister for Undergraduate Formation, emphasizes that these outings serve a dual purpose: they bridge distinct pockets of university life while offering a refreshing outlet for stress. Participants range from undergraduate students to Dominican House of Studies scholars, creating a rich tapestry of backgrounds and perspectives.
Among the regular players, Fr. Maximo Stöck stands out for his rugby pedigree and deft skill on the soccer pitch, while Loris Schaeffer, Campus Ministry’s Business Operations Manager, brings technical expertise and infectious enthusiasm to every match. Their presence illustrates how the group blends personal talent with collective purpose.
Beyond the physical exercise, the games provide a rare opportunity for participants to meet new people, forge friendships, and step away from the rigors of study. The blend of competition and fellowship nurtures not only athletic ability but also emotional resilience and spiritual growth.
