Britney Brown’s Impact Transforms UNT Women’s Basketball
Britney Brown enters her fourth year as associate head coach of the University of North Texas women’s basketball program, a role that has already reshaped the team’s trajectory. Under her guidance the Mean Green have posted three consecutive 19‑win seasons and captured a share of the program’s second‑ever conference championship in 2024.
A Coaching Journey Across the Heartland
Brown’s path to Denton reflects a decade‑plus odyssey through some of the nation’s most competitive conferences. Before arriving in Texas she spent seven seasons at Texas Christian University, where she helped the Horned Frogs amass 105 victories and mentored guards who later earned All‑Big 12 honors, including Lauren Heard and Kianna Ray. Her earlier stops at the University of Nebraska, the University of Tulsa and Tulsa’s Putnam City High School broadened her perspective as both a recruiter and a defensive architect.
Defensive Mastery and Rankings
The statistical imprint of her defensive schemes is stark. During the 2024‑25 campaign North Texas posted its winningest season in school history with a 25‑9 record, while the team ranked among the top five in the American Conference for scoring defense, opponent field‑goal percentage, turnovers forced per game and steals per game. Aysia Proctor, one of the players she helped develop, earned Second Team All‑Conference recognition for her contributions.
Roots in Oklahoma
A native of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, Brown grew up watching the game in the same state that later became her coaching laboratory. She starred at Norman North High School, graduating as the all‑time leader in points and assists, before continuing her playing career at the University of Oklahoma where she earned All‑Big 12 Honorable Mention accolades.
Looking ahead, Brown’s blend of recruiting savvy, strategic acumen and player development promises to keep North Texas at the forefront of women’s basketball, building on a foundation that already includes historic championships and a culture of sustained excellence.
