The 1931 Club: Luxury in the Stands
University of Virginia Athletics announced a sweeping renovation of Scott Stadium that will transform the existing press box into a high‑end lounge known as the 1931 Club, slated to open with the 2027 football season.
The new club will occupy the former press box space and will be accessible only to patrons who purchase premium tickets, marking a distinct shift toward a more affluent fan experience.
A climate‑controlled indoor environment will house expanded food and beverage options, flat‑screen televisions, dedicated restrooms and a level of service that the university describes as “best‑in‑class.”
The relocation of the press box to the north end of the stadium, an area colloquially called The Hill, is necessitated by the lack of existing infrastructure and will place media facilities in a space that currently supports only a large scoreboard visible from orbit.
Press Box Relocation and Media Access
Critics within the press corps have voiced concern that the redesign prioritizes commercial revenue over journalistic access, and they accuse university officials of expecting journalists to act as promoters for the new seating rather than independent observers.
Compounding the controversy is the broader trend of media consolidation, which has already reduced the number of reporters assigned to cover collegiate athletics, leaving fewer voices to question such strategic decisions.
The university’s leadership argues that the upgrade will generate additional revenue streams that can be reinvested into athlete facilities and scholarships, yet the trade‑off appears to be a narrowing of the public arena for critical reporting.
