After more than three decades at the helm of Milpitas High School football, veteran coach Kelly King announced his retirement this week, bringing an era to a close for one of Northern California’s most storied programs.
A Record of Excellence
During his tenure, King guided the team to four Central Coast Section titles, two regional championships and two CIF state championships. His programs produced countless college‑level athletes and became a benchmark for high‑school football excellence in the region.
King retires with a lifetime tally of 243 victories, a testament to his consistency, player development and ability to adapt over three successive coaching eras.
A Natural Successor
Rey Elzey, who served as King’s assistant for many years and played under him before graduating from Milpitas in 1992, will assume the head‑coach role. Elzey’s deep familiarity with the program, combined with his playing experience and coaching acumen, positions him as a natural continuation of King’s legacy.
School officials and longtime supporters say the transition reflects both continuity and fresh energy. Athletic director Maria Santos noted that the administration is confident in Elzey’s vision while honoring the foundation King built over his long career.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming season will mark the first under Elzey’s leadership, and expectations remain high. Players and coaches alike are eager to build on the culture of discipline and ambition that King cultivated for three decades.
