Veteran ACC assistant brings decades of experience and community outreach to the Gamecocks

A Strategic Addition to the Gamecocks

Steve Smith has been named Assistant Basketball Coach at the University of South Carolina, bringing a wealth of Atlantic Coast Conference experience to the program.

Over 13 seasons, Smith served in various assistant roles at Boston College, Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Southern and USC Upstate, compiling a record that includes an ACC regular‑season championship with Florida State in 2019‑20 and a Sweet 16 appearance during his Clemson tenure.

Connecting the Southeast

Head coach Lamont Paris emphasized Smith’s deep ties throughout the Southeast, noting that his network will help the Gamecocks recruit and compete at a higher level.

Paris highlighted the coach’s ability to forge relationships with high‑school talent and regional programs, a key factor in strengthening the team’s future.

Beyond the Court

Before entering coaching, Smith served in the United States Army from 1994 to 2000 and later earned a degree in information systems. He and his wife founded the nonprofit organization Steve Smith’s Shooting Stars, which seeks to inspire, educate and provide tools for success to underserved youth.

The program focuses on school‑aged children, offering mentorship, educational resources and basketball‑related activities to foster personal growth.

Smith’s playing career helped develop standout athletes such as Jaron Blossomgame and K.J. McDaniels, underscoring his ability to shape talent both on and off the court.
