Marc Gardner, the longtime head coach of the Brandeis boys basketball program, announced his retirement this week after three decades spent shaping students both on the court and in the classroom. Gardner, who has led the Broncos since the school opened its doors in 2008, finishes his tenure with a career record of 354 wins and 210 losses over 18 seasons.
A Legacy of Leadership
During his time at Brandeis, Gardner helped the team reach the regional finals on two occasions and guided them to a state tournament appearance in 2020, a run that was cut short by the COVID‑19 pandemic. Beyond basketball, he taught computer science and was part of the original staff that launched the school's athletic programs.
Ryan Taplin, who served as Gardner's assistant for several years, will succeed him as head coach starting next season. Taplin recently led the LEE team to a 24‑win campaign, marking the first 20‑win season for the program since the 2009‑10 year, a performance that has raised expectations for the upcoming schedule.
Gardner said he plans to remain a fixture in the stands, cheering on the Broncos from the bleachers while also staying involved in the broader school community. His departure marks the end of an era but also the beginning of a new chapter for a program that has grown under his guidance.
