The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association announced this week that eight baseball teams from the WPIAL have earned spots in the PIAA quarterfinal round, setting up a slate of matchups that will begin later this month.
Class-by-class breakdown
In Class 6A, Butler, Owen J. Roberts, La Salle College and Hazleton will represent the WPIAL, while Class 5A features Upper St. Clair, Hollidaysburg, West Chester-Rustin and Pittston Area. Class 4A includes Indiana, Bellefonte, Holy Ghost Prep and Montoursville, Class 3A showcases Philipsburg-Osceola, South Park, Mifflinburg and Warrior Run, Class 2A lists Neshannock, Fort Cherry, Southern Columbia and Faith Christian, and Class A comprises Eden Christian Academy, Elk County Catholic, Homer-Center and Nativity BVM.
First-round drama
The opening round produced several nail-biting contests, particularly in Class 5A and Class A, where only champions Upper St. Clair and Eden Christian Academy escaped with one-run victories.
Quarterfinal schedule
Sites and start times for the upcoming quarterfinal games have been released, with each contest scheduled to be played at the home fields of the higher-seeded teams later this week.
Reporter Nolan Stefaniak noted that the depth of talent across the eight squads reflects the competitive balance within the WPIAL, and fans can expect tightly contested games as the tournament progresses.
The PIAA, the state’s governing body for high school sports, will oversee the quarterfinals, which are expected to draw large crowds and showcase the best of high school baseball in Pennsylvania.
