A new direction for the Eagles
Olivia Gaines has been appointed head coach of the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team, bringing a fresh vision after a distinguished playing career under Dawn Staley.
She comes to NCCU after successful stints at Allen University, Richard Bland College and USC Salkehatchie, where she posted winning seasons, captured a Region 10 championship and was named Region 10 Coach of the Year.
Gaines’ coaching philosophy centers on player relationships and a fast, aggressive style of play, emphasizing a transition‑heavy offense, man‑to‑man defense and full‑court pressure.
The Eagles finished last season 9‑20, but Gaines expects rapid improvement as she installs her system and builds on the momentum of her recent achievements.
University officials, including Dr. Louis "Skip" Perkins, praised the hire and expressed confidence that the new leadership will elevate the program.
