Steve Schweer has officially taken over as the head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh men’s basketball program, inheriting a team that last captured a national championship in 2019 under Matt Lewis.
During his eight-year tenure at Illinois College, Schweer compiled an impressive résumé, guiding the squad to two Midwest Conference titles and multiple NCAA tournament berths, a track record that earned him the attention of the Titans.
The transition comes as the Titans have not returned to the NCAA tournament since 2023, a gap Schweer is determined to close. He spoke of the challenge of stepping into the competitive WIAC conference, a league known for its depth and intensity.
Just days after arriving on campus, Schweer embarked on a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Illinois to greet his new players upon their return from a foreign tour in Greece, a gesture that underscored his hands-on approach.
Central to his vision is a focus on local talent. Schweer emphasized the importance of recruiting athletes from the region, arguing that home-grown players bring a unique commitment to the community and the program.
With the new coaching staff in place, the Titans hope to restore the standard of excellence that made the program a national contender a few years ago, aiming to make NCAA tournament appearances an annual expectation.
A New Era for the Titans
Schweer’s appointment signals a strategic shift for the university, blending proven success at the Division III level with the ambitions of a Division I program.
