Eligibility Dispute Leads to Playoff Disqualification
The controversy stems from an email that alleged Saunders had previously played varsity baseball at James Buchanan High School during the 2022 campaign, a violation of PIAA rules that limit athletes to four consecutive years of eligibility after eighth grade.
District Five officials convened an emergency hearing conducted online, where representatives from Southern Fulton, the pitcher and his parents, and district chairman Paul Leonard presented their case.
Following the hearing, the district filed an appeal seeking to reinstate the season, but the final determination remains pending as the association reviews the evidence.
Northern Bedford County, the team that replaced Southern Fulton in the bracket, fell to Homer Center 11-1 in the opening round, leaving the vacancy unfilled in the championship picture.
