Eastern Michigan University has named Mike Ott as its new head baseball coach, a move that signals a decisive step toward restoring the program’s former glory.
A Proven Builder
Ott arrives after a 14‑year stint at Kalamazoo College, where he transformed a modest Division III squad into a national contender, capturing back‑to‑back MIAA regular‑season championships in 2023 and 2024 and earning the MIAA Team GPA Award nine times.
The Eagles’ previous season under interim coach Trevor Beerman ended at 19‑34, a record that left the roster at risk of attrition. Ott’s reputation for fostering a culture of excellence, both on the diamond and in the classroom, is seen as the catalyst needed to keep current players and attract new talent.
A Coaching Carousel
His hiring is part of a wider reshuffling across college baseball, with notable moves such as Pedro Grifol taking over at Florida International and Will Davis departing Lamar for the University of Houston Cougars.
Jack Clark, Senior Manager for Draft Operations at MLB, praised Ott’s leadership qualities, noting that his ability to blend competitive drive with academic rigor aligns perfectly with EMU’s vision.
Under Ott’s guidance, EMU hopes to build a sustainable pipeline of skilled players who excel academically and athletically, positioning the program as a perennial threat in the Mid‑American Conference.
