A New Chapter for Opera
Opera Arlington is turning the iconic opera Carmen into a vibrant soccer‑infused spectacle that will debut ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Texas.
The production recasts the flamboyant bullfighter Escamillo as a charismatic soccer star, imagined as a member of Spain’s 1920 Olympic silver‑medal team, blending the swagger of the toreador with the kinetic energy of the pitch.
Co‑founder Eliza Escalante notes the natural parallels between the confident stride of a toreador and the global aura of Cristiano Ronaldo, using the comparison to bridge the worlds of sport and opera.
To broaden appeal, the show employs double‑cast roles, English subtitles and invites the audience to dress in soccer jerseys or 1920s glamour, making the art form more approachable for newcomers.
Kaswanna Kanyinda, who embodies Carmen, points out that the opera’s famous arias have already seeped into pop culture, while Jordan Hammons describes the narrative as a web of love triangles and high‑stakes drama that resonates with modern viewers.
Performances will be held at Trinity UMC Arlington on June 5 and 6, with tickets starting at $15, offering an affordable entry point to experience this innovative crossover.
