Rowan County Secures First Win
Rowan County’s American Legion baseball team earned its first victory of the season on Tuesday, defeating High Point 9-6 in a back‑and‑forth contest that showcased both offensive firepower and gritty pitching.
The offense was anchored by a balanced attack that produced 13 hits. Luke Ponczka led the way with four runs batted in, while Cole Blevins, Jayven Parks, Drew Pegram, Carter Durant and Brody Pope each contributed two hits apiece.
Durant’s sole extra‑base hit came in the form of a double, and the lineup also generated RBI singles from Parks, Blevins, Pegram, Durant and Pope, spreading the runs across the order.
Pitching That Held the Lead
On the mound, Kendal Sifford tossed four innings and limited High Point to two earned runs, setting the stage for a strong finish. Reliever Maverick Walters added two more innings without surrendering a run, preserving the advantage.
Jacob Prevette, a left‑hander from Carson, closed out the game with a flawless seventh inning to earn the save, capping a solid collective effort on the mound.
High Point answered with a four‑run second inning and played errorless baseball for much of the night, but Rowan managed a single defensive misstep that did not prove costly.
The team is slated to meet High Point again on Friday at South Rowan High, a rematch that promises another chance to fine‑tune their approach before the season progresses.
