Duke’s football program celebrated a historic milestone recently, capturing the ACC Championship for the first time in more than three decades. The victory marked a resurgence for the Blue Devils, who have not enjoyed such a triumph since the late 1980s.
Head coach Manny Diaz, now in his second year at the helm, is determined to turn that breakthrough into a sustained run of titles. His ambition is to repeat as conference champions, a feat not achieved since 1989, and he knows the work cut out for him.
Rebuilding a Defensive Backfield
The defense will be reshaped around the secondary, where the loss of All‑ACC cornerback Chandler Rivers to the Baltimore Ravens leaves a significant gap. Redshirt sophomore Landan Callahan, redshirt junior Kimari Robinson and Montana transfer Kyon Loud are slated to inherit the starting roles.
Robinson, praised for his closing bursts and football intelligence, is viewed as the most polished defender in the room. Joining him are Stanford alumnus Che Ojarikre and redshirt sophomore Kaleb Lanier, who will man the nickelback spot, while veteran safety Jonathan Patke will coordinate the perimeter and interior coverage.
Patke believes the group has the potential to become a strength of the defense, provided they can gel quickly against the league’s top pass‑catchers. The upcoming season will test whether the new combinations can deliver the reliability needed to protect the lead and control the tempo.
