City Council Backs Funding for Safer Ballpark Lighting
The Tuscaloosa City Council’s Finance Committee has given the green light to a funding agreement that will see the city allocate up to $500,000 from its 2025 capital budget to modernize the lighting system at the McDonald Hughes Baseball Complex.
The upgrade is a response to safety concerns that surfaced years ago when a light pole collapsed during a storm, exposing the fragility of the complex’s aging electrical infrastructure.
Aging Infrastructure Sparks Safety Review
PARA, the local recreation authority, will oversee the project and has been working with Musco Lighting, a firm that previously installed lighting at Sokol Park North and South, to design a replacement that addresses the disintegration of poles installed in the late 1970s.
Executive Director Brian Davis explained that the existing poles are deteriorating from the inside out, prompting the need for a comprehensive overhaul that includes new poles, lights and associated electrical work.
Path Forward and Timeline
Estimates put the total cost between $450,000 and $475,000, and the authority plans to issue bids in August with the goal of completing the work before the next baseball season.
Council members voiced unanimous support for the initiative, noting that the aging lighting system has been a concern for some time and that the upgrade will enhance safety for players and fans alike.
