Stanhope Elmore High School Unveils Its First Girls’ Flag Football Team

Stanhope Elmore High School in Alabama is set to field its first girls’ flag football team this upcoming season, marking a milestone for the Mustangs program. The initiative comes as interest in the sport surges across the region, with roughly 70 students turning out for tryouts in the first week.

The team will compete in Class 5A Area Region 2 next year, facing opponents such as Percy Julian, Park Crossing, Wetumpka and Russell County. Nearby schools including Prattville, Marbury and Billingsley have already established successful programs, with Prattville reaching the Final Four in 2023 and both Marbury and Prattville advancing to the Elite Eight in 2025.

A Coach With a Vision

Head coach Kashundra Davis, an English teacher at the school, will guide the team through its inaugural year. She emphasizes teamwork, development and a strong foundation for future success, aiming to create an environment where each player can thrive both on and off the field.

Davis brings a fresh perspective to the program, drawing on her own passion for athletics and education to shape a culture of resilience and collaboration. Her leadership style focuses on mentorship, encouraging players to take ownership of their growth while fostering a sense of unity.

The school’s athletic department, in partnership with the Alabama High School Athletic Association, is working to ensure that the team has access to proper facilities and training tools. With continued support from parents, local businesses and the broader community, the Mustangs hope to set a precedent for expanding girls’ sports opportunities across the region.
