UMass Hockey Bolsters Roster with Boston Native Gavin Cornforth

The Minutemen add a high‑energy forward ahead of the 2026‑27 season, bringing junior experience and leadership.

The University of Massachusetts announced this week that Gavin Cornforth, a 5‑9, 170‑pound right‑shot forward, has signed on to wear the Minutemen jersey for the 2026‑27 season. The Boston native brings a blend of speed, tenacity and junior‑level experience that head coach Greg Carvel believes will elevate the team’s energy on the ice.

Cornforth’s hockey journey has taken him from the familiar rinks of Boston College to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he starred for the Moncton Wildcats. In 29 regular‑season games with the Wildcats he recorded 30 points, including 12 goals and 18 assists, and added 13 more points during a deep playoff run.

Prior to his junior career, Cornforth honed his skills in the United States Hockey League with the Dubuque Fighting Saints, where he served as an alternate captain during the 2024‑25 season. Over three USHL seasons he amassed 96 points, highlighted by 46 goals and 50 assists, and contributed 11 postseason points.

Coach Carvel praised the new addition, noting that Cornforth’s high energy and competitive spirit align perfectly with the program’s philosophy. “He’s a player who brings intensity every shift,” Carvel said in a statement released by the athletics department.

The Minutemen will welcome six fresh faces to the roster this upcoming season, with Cornforth joining a group that includes fellow newcomers Max Curran, Maxim Massé, Melvin Novotny, Barrett Dexheimer and Mathieu Taillefer. The influx of talent aims to restore the program’s competitive edge in the Hockey East conference.

A Boston Native’s Return to the Northeast

Born and raised in Boston, Cornforth’s roots in Massachusetts make his commitment to the state’s flagship university especially meaningful. He will join a growing list of local products who have chosen to stay home while pursuing a collegiate career, a trend that reflects the region’s strong hockey culture.

Fans can expect to see Cornforth’s name on the lineup sheet when the Minutemen open their season later this fall. His addition is part of a broader strategy by the coaching staff to blend youthful vigor with seasoned leadership, a formula that could translate into a stronger defensive presence and more dynamic offensive output.

The University of Massachusetts athletics department also took the opportunity to highlight the official websites of its partner organizations, including the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the United States Hockey League, underscoring the interconnected nature of modern collegiate recruiting.
