A posthumous tribute at the President’s Awards Dinner
On June 5, the USA Hockey President’s Awards Dinner in Denver will shine a spotlight on the late Mike Norton, who will receive the 2026 Walter Yaciuk Award. The honor comes as a tribute to his quarter‑century of service to the organization’s coaching education program and his relentless dedication to elevating the next generation of coaches.
Norton’s career spanned more than 25 years of hands‑on development, during which he conducted countless clinics, mentored emerging mentors, and infused every session with a genuine passion for hockey. His influence extended beyond the ice, shaping the professional trajectories of many who now sit in coaching chairs across the country.
A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Norton honed his playing skills at St. Louis University before continuing his collegiate career at Miami University of Ohio. He later coached at the Division III level at Wisconsin‑River Falls and served as an assistant at his alma mater, Miami of Ohio, before taking on leadership roles that would define his legacy.
From 1993 to 2015, Norton held the position of assistant athletic director at Culver Academies in Indiana, where he also guided his son, Rob Norton, on the ice. Colleagues such as Kelly Rogers, Bill Switaj, and Walter Yaciuk have recalled his ability to connect with people, his infectious enthusiasm, and the lasting imprint he left on every coach he mentored.
The Walter Yaciuk Award, named for a distinguished figure in hockey’s educational landscape, celebrates individuals whose contributions have profoundly advanced coaching development. Norton’s posthumous recognition underscores the depth of his impact and serves as a reminder of the power of dedication, mentorship, and love for the game.
