Baton Rouge Zydeco Hockey Team Secures New Ownership, Potential Rebranding to Kingfish

Former FPHL champions Binghamton Black Bears take over the franchise as new ownership promises fresh direction

The Baton Rouge Zydeco, a minor‑league hockey franchise that has called the Capital Region home for three years, will not be leaving the city. Instead, the team has been acquired by the Binghamton Black Bears, the three‑time Federal Prospect Hockey League champions, who will assume control of the franchise.

New Ownership Brings Hope of Renewal

Jacob Hector, a Baton Rouge businessman, leads the new ownership group. In a brief statement, Hector emphasized that the acquisition represents a turning point for the club, which has faced declining attendance and on‑ice performance in recent seasons.

Speculation about a possible rebranding to the Baton Rouge Kingfish has already begun, spurred by a recent rename of the official Facebook fan page to the "Official Baton Rouge Kingfish Fan Group." The Kingfish name evokes nostalgia, recalling a team that once played at the city’s Centroplex before moving to Victoria, Canada, in the late 1990s.

A Franchise at a Crossroads

The Zydeco’s early success was striking: in its inaugural season the team attracted more than 110,000 fans and generated an $8.1 million economic impact for the city. However, attendance dropped to just under 61,500 in the most recent campaign, and the club finished second‑to‑last in its division with a 17‑win, 39‑loss record.

Management tensions came to a head when longtime president Donald Lewis departed to focus on the Topeka Scarecrows, another FPHL franchise he owns. Fans and local observers, including veteran analyst Sid Edwards, have voiced concerns that the team’s downfall was tied to leadership struggles.

The new owners plan to announce the team’s official name, schedule and ticket information in the coming weeks. Community partners such as Raising Cane's River Center are expected to play a central role in the revival effort, leveraging the venue’s established fan base and infrastructure.
