Alex Hale, a sophomore at Austin Peay University, never imagined that a series of soccer injuries would lead him to the bustling locker rooms of the Governors' men's basketball program.
The former high‑school soccer standout from Christian County had to step away from the pitch after multiple injuries, but his grandparents, alumni of the school, helped him land a student‑manager position with the basketball team.
Now in his second year on campus, Hale spends his days coordinating practice drills, compiling scouting reports and handling the gritty rebounding work that often goes unnoticed by the crowd.
Servanthood and Brotherhood on the Sidelines
The basketball program at Austin Peay stresses values of servanthood, brotherhood and unconditional love, encouraging its members to give back through community service projects that range from youth clinics to local charity events.
Hale works closely with players such as Collin Parker, Matt Enright, Rashuad Marshall and Zyree Collins, as well as veteran Corey Gibson, learning the nuances of teamwork while contributing to the squad's chemistry.
Pursuing a degree in finance, Hale hopes to carve out a career on the business side of sports, blending his analytical mindset with the lessons he’s learned on the court.
Through his role as a manager, Hale says he has grown both personally and professionally, embracing a supportive environment that feels like a second family.
Looking Ahead
As the season progresses, Hale remains focused on refining his managerial skills and contributing to the team's community outreach, confident that the lessons he’s gaining now will shape his future in the sports industry.
