A Breakout Campaign in Triple-A
Luis Lara, a 21-year-old outfield prospect in the Milwaukee system, is currently lighting up the Triple-A International League with the Nashville Sounds. In 55 games he is batting .345, reaching base at .452 and slugging .510, numbers that place him among the league’s top hitters.
What makes the performance especially noteworthy is the way Lara has added power to a contact-heavy approach. His isolated power sits at .165, nearly double his previous Double-A mark, while his strikeout rate has fallen to a career low of 12.8% and his contact rate climbs to 87.5%. Those shifts have lifted his wRC+ into the fourth-best spot in the league.
The surge has not gone unnoticed in the Brewers’ clubhouse. Reliever Rob Zastryzny recently highlighted Lara’s “quality of at-bats” as a sign that the youngster is ready for a bigger challenge, even as the organization evaluates its outfield depth.
Milwaukee’s outfield appears set on paper, with Jackson Chourio, Garrett Mitchell and Sal Frelick slated as the everyday starters. Frelick’s recent dip in production has sparked conversation, yet his clubhouse presence keeps him entrenched in the lineup, leaving little room for Lara on the active roster.
Adding to the hurdle, Lara is not on the 40-man roster, a procedural barrier that typically delays call-ups. The Brewers’ outfield collectively carries a negative combined fWAR of –0.1, underscoring the team’s need for a spark that could come from a midseason promotion if Lara continues to produce.
