Eshelman's reputation rests on a rare blend of durability and control. In 2013 he set the NCAA single‑season record for walks per nine innings at 0.23, a testament to his ability to keep hitters off balance.
That performance earned him a spot on the 2014 U.S. National Collegiate Baseball Team and paved the way for his selection in the 2015 MLB Draft, where the Houston Astros chose him in the later rounds.
From the minors to the majors
After signing with the Astros, Eshelman navigated the minor leagues with the Corpus Christi Hooks and later the Lancaster JetHawks before earning a call‑up to the big leagues. He debuted with the Baltimore Orioles on July 1, 2019, and subsequently contributed to the San Diego Padres before announcing his retirement from playing.
A new chapter in coaching
Beyond his playing days, Eshelman spent four seasons within the San Diego Padres organization as Upper‑Level Pitching Coordinator, where he oversaw the development of several prospects. Prior to that, he served as pitching coach for the Lake Elsinore Storm and the Fort Wayne TinCaps, honing the skills of young arms across the California and Midwest circuits.
