A Thrilling Crossover at Cony Field
The Mustangs of Monmouth Academy traveled to Augusta on Tuesday night to face the Cony High School Rams in a crossover that quickly turned into a fireworks display. The final score read 12-11 in favor of Monmouth, a result that not only halted Cony’s early-season surge but also cemented the Mustangs’ fifth consecutive victory.
Monmouth struck first with a six-run burst in the second inning, a rally sparked by a timely hit from Tyler Day and a clutch RBI single from Gavin Parsons. The offense didn’t stop there; five more runs came across in the fifth, pushing the lead to 11-7 before Cony could muster a response.
Cony answered with a flurry of hits, finishing the game with 15 total base knocks and narrowing the gap to a single run. However, six defensive miscues proved costly, allowing Monmouth to extend its advantage and keep the pressure on.
Seventh-Inning Heroics
The turning point arrived in the seventh inning. With the Rams threatening to close the gap, Day and Parsons delivered a series of sharp defensive plays that sealed the outcome. Their quick throws and steady hands forced a ground-out and a pop-up, ending the rally before it could tie the game.
Coach Eric Palleschi, who has guided Monmouth through a season of steady improvement, praised the Rams’ talent and coaching after the final out. “They’re a well-coached team,” he said, “and we’re just glad to come out on the right side of a game that could have gone either way.”
Jacob Harmon, who opened the game on the mound for Monmouth, tossed three solid innings before handing the ball to the bullpen. His early work set the tone for a pitching staff that limited Cony’s late surge, allowing the Mustangs to preserve the lead.
