Granny Basketball League eyes Tulare County expansion
A recent exhibition game held in Visalia showcased the Granny Basketball League, a unique league that brings together women aged 50 and older for a nostalgic version of the sport.
The league, founded by Barb Trammell, follows 1920s‑style rules that prohibit running, jumping or physical contact, limit dribbling to two times and require a player to keep one foot on the floor for shots.
With roughly 800 participants spread across 57 cities in eleven U.S. states and one Canadian province, the league has grown into a national phenomenon while preserving the spirit of early women’s basketball.
Community meeting to shape the future
A meeting scheduled for May 16 at the Visalia Branch of the Tulare County Library will give community members a chance to hear directly from Trammell about the possibility of establishing a Tulare County team.
Local women who attended the exhibition have already expressed interest in forming a squad, and organizers hope the discussion will spark enough enthusiasm to field a homegrown side.
The event underscores how a simple exhibition can ignite broader community engagement and potentially add a new chapter to the league’s growing story.
