A New Chapter for Auburn Basketball
Auburn’s men’s basketball program has locked in another high‑profile nonconference opponent, adding Middle Tennessee to its 2026‑27 schedule. The Tigers will meet the Blue Raiders in the Rocket City Classic on December 15, 2026, at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
This contest will mark Auburn’s second appearance in the Rocket City Classic and, importantly, the first time the Tigers have played in Huntsville since 2023. The game slots into a broader five‑game road trip that also includes matchups against West Virginia and Wisconsin, underscoring the Tigers’ intent to test themselves early in the season.
Coach Steven Pearl’s Vision
Head coach Steven Pearl expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming clash, emphasizing the competitive spirit of Middle Tennessee’s program. Pearl noted that the Blue Raiders bring a disciplined style of play that will challenge Auburn to elevate its own performance.
Middle Tennessee concluded the 2025‑26 season with a 17‑15 record, falling in the opening round of the Conference USA Tournament to Louisiana Tech. Despite the modest win‑loss ledger, the Blue Raiders were ranked No. 175 in the KenPom index and No. 162 in the NET, indicators that the team remains competitive within its conference.
A Strategic Nonconference Slate
Beyond the Rocket City Classic, Auburn has announced a total of five nonconference games for the 2026‑27 campaign. In addition to Middle Tennessee, the Tigers will travel to face West Virginia and Wisconsin, opponents known for their rigorous schedules and strong defensive schemes. These games are designed to sharpen Auburn’s roster before conference play begins.
The scheduling move reflects a broader strategy by Auburn’s athletics department to bolster its national résumé and improve seeding prospects for the NCAA tournament. By confronting a diverse set of styles and venues, the Tigers aim to build resilience and depth heading into the SEC schedule.
