The “Dogs vs Cats” Rivalry: Northern Michigan vs Michigan Tech’s Enduring Hockey Feud

From 1979 beginnings to modern CCHA showdowns, the Upper Peninsula's fiercest college hockey rivalry persists.

The rivalry between Northern Michigan University and Michigan Technological University is more than a schedule of games; it is a cultural touchstone for the Upper Peninsula, often dubbed the "dogs versus cats" clash.

Michigan Tech fielded its first varsity hockey team in 1919 and quickly became a dominant force in the region, a supremacy that lasted nearly five decades. The two schools first met on the ice in 1979, each walking away with a win, setting the stage for a rivalry that would span over four decades.

Conference realignments and early triumphs

Northern Michigan joined the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) full‑time in 1977, quickly establishing itself as a powerhouse. The 1981 season saw both programs advance to the Frozen Four, though each fell in its semifinal, while Michigan Tech captured a 2‑1‑1 edge in the regular‑season series.

The 1990s marked Northern Michigan’s golden era. In 1991 the Wildcats captured their first national championship, edging Boston University 8‑7 in triple overtime, and went on to win 22 of 37 meetings against the Huskies, cementing their control of the rivalry.

A modern resurgence

After a period of conference shuffling that separated the teams from the late 1990s through 2014, Michigan Tech found a new lease on life under coach Mel Pearson. The Huskies claimed a WCHA championship in 2016‑17 and, after re‑entering the CCHA in 2021, have won 12 of the 17 meetings, highlighted by a CCHA title in 2023‑24 and consecutive NCAA tournament appearances from 2022 to 2024.

Despite the growing challenges of the name‑image‑likeness (NIL) landscape, which has made recruiting in the Upper Peninsula increasingly difficult, the passion of the fan bases remains undiminished. Each arena still erupts with the same fervor that has defined this rivalry since its inception.
