Massamba Diop has officially arrived at Gonzaga University in Spokane, ready to suit up for the 2026‑27 campaign. The 7‑foot‑1 center, originally from Rufisque, Senegal, brings a rare combination of height, skill and defensive instincts to the Bulldogs' lineup.
A Towering Presence in the Paint
During his freshman season at Arizona State he averaged 13.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game while shooting 59.4% on two‑pointers and 30.8% from three‑point range. His 69 blocked shots would rank among the top four single‑season performances in Gonzaga history, underscoring his shot‑blocking impact.
Diop will replace Graham Ike in the frontcourt and will line up alongside Braden Huff, a returning big man who missed the previous season with a knee injury. Together they form a defensive duo that promises to protect the rim and control the paint.
Recruitment Drama and International Ties
The recruit's path to Spokane was anything but straightforward. After a competitive battle that also involved St. John's and Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino, Diop ultimately committed to Gonzaga. He previously shared the court with Ismaila Diagne at Real Madrid, and Diagne's influence helped sway his decision even after Diagne had pledged to San Francisco.
Diop's arrival coincides with reports that Gonzaga has reached an agreement with Real Madrid center Izan Almansa, pending NCAA eligibility approval, further enriching the program's international pedigree.
Coach Mark Few expressed confidence that Diop will rank among the nation's elite centers, noting that his defensive skill set complements Huff's touch around the rim. The Bulldogs hope the new frontcourt will translate into stronger performances as they aim to contend in the upcoming season.
