James Sams Takes the Helm of Brimfield Boys Basketball
James Sams, who has spent the past two seasons as an assistant under longtime coach Scott Carlson, was announced as the new head coach of the Brimfield boys basketball program, succeeding Carlson who retired after 28 years and 568 career victories.
Carlson, who guided the Indians to a 25‑8 record in the 2025‑26 campaign and a Class 1A regional championship, made his succession plans clear before stepping down, telling Sams that he would be his chosen replacement.
Sams, a native of the region who previously coached at North Fulton and Williamsfield under Bob Anderson, brings a blend of playing experience and strategic insight, having absorbed Carlson’s meticulous practice schedules and scouting methods while preparing to imprint his own style on the team.
A Dual‑Sport Commitment
Beyond basketball, Sams will continue to oversee the school’s baseball program, juggling two varsity responsibilities as he builds toward the upcoming season and evaluates the impact of graduating three all‑conference players from last year’s roster.
The Indians’ recent run to the sectional semifinals, where they fell to Deer Creek‑Mackinaw, underscores the competitive landscape Sams will navigate, but also highlights the depth of talent and community support he can draw upon.
With the school’s athletic department rooted in Brimfield High School and its feeder programs at North Fulton and Williamsfield, Sams aims to sustain the tradition of excellence while introducing fresh ideas that reflect his own coaching philosophy.
