Florida State’s 2026 transfer class has climbed to No. 28 in the national rankings, marking a significant addition of talent through the NCAA Transfer Portal.
The Seminoles welcomed 23 newcomers, among them linebacker Chris Jones, a standout tackler who arrives from Southern Miss.
A Defensive Upgrade
Jones logged 135 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, a forced fumble, two pass breakups and an interception last season, placing him among the top‑10 FBS tacklers.
He also made a tackle on 17.5% of his snaps, translating to roughly one stop every 5.7 plays, a rate that signals consistent disruption.
Coaches expect Jones to slide into a starting role alongside Blake Nichelson, forming a veteran‑heavy linebacker duo that should stabilize the front seven.
The Seminoles struggled to contain the run during stretches of the previous season, hampered by injuries and limited depth at the position.
Jones’s experience and production are viewed as the missing pieces to close those gaps and give the defense a more reliable identity.
Alongside Jones, veteran Mikai Gbayor and a group of younger linebackers will compete for snaps, creating depth that could prove crucial over a long schedule.
The coaching staff believes the blend of seasoned playmakers and fresh talent will allow Florida State to field a more balanced and aggressive defense in the upcoming campaign.
