Rutgers University entered the 2025 season with a 5‑7 record, a result that left the Scarlet Knights just outside bowl eligibility and highlighted the need for improvement on both sides of the ball.
A New Defensive Vision
A Fox Sports poll placed the team at No. 16 in the Big Ten, but the defensive numbers told a starker story: the unit surrendered 432.8 yards per game, the highest total in the conference, and allowed 31.8 points per game, tying for 17th place.
Adding to the overhaul, veteran coach Travis Johansen, formerly an assistant at the University of Iowa, was hired as the new defensive coordinator for the 2026 campaign, bringing a fresh scheme and a reputation for disciplined play.
Johansen will work alongside head coach Greg Schiano and assistants Robb Smith, Zach Sparber, and KJ Duff, all of whom have expressed confidence that the new system can tighten the defense and create more turnovers.
Bowl Aspirations
The ultimate goal for the Scarlet Knights is to return to bowl season, a milestone last achieved in 2022, and the coaching staff believes that shoring up the defense is the key to turning a losing record into a winning one.
If the defense can reduce its yardage and points allowed even modestly, the team’s overall record could swing from the current 5‑7 to a winning season, setting the stage for a postseason appearance in the near future.
