Akyia Baker has been appointed as the new women's flag football coach at Knox College, bringing a fresh perspective to a program that will field its first club team in the spring of 2027.
The Rise of Flag Football
The sport’s surge across youth, high school and collegiate levels has prompted institutions to invest in competitive yet inclusive opportunities for female athletes, making Knox’s initiative part of a broader national trend.
Baker arrives after a productive stint at Purdue University Northwest, where she served as an assistant coach and program coordinator, helping the Pride post a 9‑3 record in their debut season and later working as an athletics operations assistant since August 2025.
Athletic Director Justin Newell praised Baker’s energy and passion, noting that her leadership aligns with the college’s ambition to build a competitive yet welcoming environment for its student‑athletes.
Under Baker’s guidance, the club team plans to transition to varsity status during the 2027‑28 academic year, a timeline that underscores the college’s confidence in the program’s trajectory and the sport’s growing legitimacy on campus.
