The Philadelphia 76ers announced on Tuesday that Mike Gansey will assume the role of president of basketball operations, effective immediately. The move comes after the team and Daryl Morey mutually agreed to part ways in May, ending his six‑year tenure as general manager.
Gansey’s NBA pedigree
Gansey arrives with a deep résumé that includes 15 seasons as general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers. During his time in Cleveland, the franchise captured 259 victories, ranking third among all NBA teams in that span, and helped lay the groundwork for a competitive roster that reached the Finals in 2018.
Josh Harris, the 76ers’ managing general partner, praised Gansey’s track record and welcomed both him and his family to Philadelphia. "Mike brings a wealth of experience and a clear vision for building a championship‑ready team," Harris said in a statement.
A fresh direction for the franchise
In his new capacity, Gansey will oversee the NBA draft, free‑agency negotiations and the overall basketball strategy for the 76ers. He has already indicated that his focus will be on assembling a roster capable of contending for a title while maintaining the club’s commitment to player development and community engagement.
The organization’s leadership expressed confidence that Gansey’s blend of analytical acumen and relationship‑building will help the team navigate the upcoming offseason and position Philadelphia for sustained success.
