A Strategic Choice for the Vanguard
Matt Miller has been appointed head coach of the Lebanon Valley Vanguard men’s basketball team, bringing a decade‑plus record of winning programs to the Annville campus.
Miller’s journey through college basketball includes stints as an assistant at the University of New Hampshire, Mount St. Mary’s University, and Loyola University (Md.), where he contributed to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021.
Prior to that, he helped shepherd Shepherd University to its best finish in two decades, guiding the Rams to a 20‑10 record, and he previously led St. Maria Goretti High School to a 100‑42 run punctuated by multiple championships.
His high school coaching résumé also features a 55‑18 record over three seasons at Winston Churchill High School, a track record that earned him repeated recognition as a team captain and a student‑athlete award at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where he graduated with dual majors in economics and public policy.
Beyond wins, Miller is celebrated for his leadership style, work ethic, and emphasis on developing student‑athletes both on the court and in the classroom, qualities that align with the Vanguard’s academic mission.

The college’s athletic director, Patrick Ratke, highlighted Miller’s proven ability to build competitive teams while fostering academic excellence, noting that the new coach’s vision dovetails with the institution’s broader goals.
Nathan Davis, a longtime supporter of the program, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that Miller’s arrival signals a renewed focus on recruiting and player development.
