Michigan State University’s football program has added a new piece to its future lineup, as three-star hybrid safety/linebacker Henry Sakalas announced his commitment to the Spartans for the 2027 recruiting class.
Sakalas, a standout from Nazareth Academy in La Grange Park, Illinois, brings a blend of size and speed that coaches say fits the modern defensive scheme. He is currently listed as the No. 87 safety nationally and the 855th overall prospect in the 247Sports.com composite rankings.
A Boost to the Defensive Backfield
His pledge marks the third commitment the Spartans have received from Illinois prospects this cycle, following earlier pledges from Matthew Brady and Ohimai Ozolua, underscoring the state’s growing influence on Michigan State’s recruiting footprint.
The Chicago-area recruit evaluated offers from a handful of power programs, including Nebraska, Illinois, Minnesota and West Virginia, before deciding that East Lansing offered the best combination of academic opportunity and defensive development.
Coaches believe Sakalas can contribute immediately on special teams while he continues to refine his technique, and his addition is expected to deepen a defensive backfield that has been a focal point of the staff’s rebuilding efforts.
The commitment also reflects a broader trend of Michigan State leveraging relationships in the Midwest to build a balanced, competitive roster, a strategy that could pay dividends when the 2027 class finally steps onto the field.
