The Mathews High School soccer program brought its season to a close this week, capping a campaign that began with two hard‑fought quarterfinal victories on home turf last Thursday. The excitement in the stands was palpable as both the boys' and girls' teams demonstrated depth and resilience, setting the stage for a bittersweet postseason finale.
The girls' side opened the knockout round with a 3‑1 triumph over Middlesex, a result highlighted by goals from Kristen Hudgins and Meredith Salvadori. Their attacking cohesion and disciplined defending hinted at a deep run, but the momentum shifted dramatically in the regional semifinals when they faced Bruton, succumbing to a 7‑0 defeat that underscored the challenges of competing at the highest local level.
The boys' team mirrored the girls' early success, dispatching King and Queen 2‑0 with goals from Elias Hidalgo and Chance Higginbotham. The victory showcased a balanced offensive attack and a solid defensive foundation. However, the boys' journey ended in the regional semifinals against Northampton, where a 5‑1 loss saw Eric Cardenas net the lone goal for Mathews, a consolation in an otherwise challenging match.
Individual brilliance shone through the final standings, as the league recognized several standout performers with postseason honors. Stanley Ouma was crowned the boys' Player of the Year, while Meredith Salvadori earned the same distinction for the girls, reflecting their leadership and impact throughout the season.
First‑team all‑district selections further amplified the teams' achievements. The girls' first‑team included Morgan Stearns, Hannah McBurney and Ellie Congrove, while the boys' first‑team honored Henry Sowers, Elton Hudgins, Sal Cardenas and goalkeeper Adam Dustin for their consistent excellence.
Additional recognition arrived for the girls' second‑team All‑District honorees, Shelby Ray and Leah Hyde, whose contributions epitomized the depth and spirit of the Mathews program.
