AJ Lucas Commits to Western Michigan Baseball Program

Transfer standout brings record‑setting power to Kalamazoo’s Broncos

Western Michigan University announced the addition of AJ Lucas to its baseball roster for the 2026 season, marking the arrival of fourteen new student‑athletes set to join the program this fall.

A record‑setting sophomore season

Lucas arrives after a record‑setting sophomore campaign at Moberly Area Community College, where he batted .411, launched nineteen home runs, drove in sixty runs and stole twenty bases, earning NJCAA Division II Region 16 Player of the Year and First Team All‑Region honors while also being named to the All‑Defensive Team.

During his freshman year, he posted a .365 average with seven homers and fifty‑five RBIs, establishing himself as the school’s all‑time leader in career home runs and RBIs.

Prior to his community‑college tenure, Lucas starred at Bellevue East High School in Nebraska, where he tied single‑season records for doubles, triples and runs scored and earned Second Team Super State and First Team All‑Class A accolades.

Coach Billy Gernon, who has been guiding the Broncos’ development, highlighted the impact of Lucas’s blend of power and speed, noting that the transfer adds depth to a recruiting class that could reshape the team’s offensive dynamics.

The move underscores Western Michigan’s strategy of bolstering talent through the junior‑college pipeline, a pathway that has produced several standout players in recent years.
