Burton Baseball clinches 2026 UIL state title
In a night that will be remembered for years, the Burton baseball squad captured the 2026 UIL Class 2A-II state championship, defeating Ropes 6-1 in Round Rock, Texas.
The Panthers seized a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Isaac Matthies drove in a run with a single, setting the tone for a rally that would grow in the following frame.
A four-run fifth inning stretched the advantage, highlighted by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch from Rueben Rodriguez that forced home two runs, and a sac fly from Rodriguez that brought home the game's first run.
Tyler Witt, named MVP, delivered a stellar outing with six strikeouts, two hits and two runs scored, anchoring both the mound and the lineup.
The Eagles loaded the bases in the seventh, but Rodriguez caught a pop-up to seal the final out, preserving the lead.
Coach Thaler's pride
Head coach Matt Thaler expressed deep excitement and pride, praising the team's resilience and the community that supported them throughout the tournament.
The victory marks Burton's first state championship in 37 years, adding to the 1987 title and cementing the program's legacy in Texas baseball.
