H‑E‑B has pledged $500,000 to fund the construction of new basketball courts in neighborhoods that have long lacked safe, accessible play spaces across San Antonio, Austin, Brownsville and Corpus Christi. The investment comes as the San Antonio Spurs prepare for Game 2 of the NBA Finals, tying the retailer’s community outreach to the team’s championship run.
A Partnership for Play
The contribution will be formally presented to Spurs Give, the charitable arm of Spurs Sports & Entertainment, which will coordinate the rollout of the courts and ensure they serve youth programs throughout the four cities. By aligning with a nonprofit that already connects basketball to mentorship, H‑E‑B hopes to turn each new surface into a hub for after‑school leagues and summer camps.
In addition to the capital project, H‑E‑B has bought a block of tickets for Game 2 and will distribute them to shoppers at select stores, while earlier this week it surprised customers with tickets to Game 1. The giveaway extends to free groceries and signed jerseys, with Spurs legend Bruce Bowen joining H‑E‑B representatives to hand out the prizes.
The presentation ceremony and ticket distribution are scheduled for 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday at the H‑E‑B Plus! located on 6818 S. Zarzamora Street in San Antonio, where media outlets will have access to interviews with company officials, Spurs Give staff and Bowen himself.
A Vision for the Future
Beyond the immediate fan experience, the initiative underscores a broader strategy by the retailer to invest in the health and cohesion of Texas communities, using sports as a catalyst for youth development and neighborhood pride.
